Softball Splits with Coker Using 3-1 Win before Falling 10-9 in Wild Game Two

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Visiting Coker College ruined host Pfeiffer University's attempt to sweep their first Conference Carolinas series of the year scoring six runs in the top of the seventh of game two to salvage a softball split on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Falcons took the opener 3-1 before the Cobras escaped with a 10-9 win in the nightcap. Pfeiffer ends the day at 10-14 overall, 3-5 in league play, while Coker slides to 16-10, 9-5.

In the opener, Sarah Rountree started Coker off on the right foot with a solo homer to left-center putting the Cobras up 1-0. Pfeiffer would plate all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth advancing to the 3-1 win. Hannah Jackson came up with a go-ahead two-out, two-run double to right-center while Ashlee Ellen doubled home Jackson with the insurance tally. Jessica Griffin would pick up the win tossing 6.2 innings allowing just the one run on five hits with three strikeouts while Shelby Brown recorded the final out in the seventh to pick up the save. Ellen would finish game one 3-for-3 with her RBI to lead the Lady Falcons.

The wild nightcap began with each team trading two runs in the first frame as Coker used a two-run homer from Sydney Weatherford while Pfeiffer picked up another Ellen RBI double and Cobras error to tie the game at two. Coker would take a 3-2 lead in the second before the Lady Falcons exploded for six in the third to grab the 8-3 advantage.

Ellen continued her tear at the plate with a two-run blast to left after Jackson singled. After Sam Taylor's RBI fielders choice made it 5-3, Khristin Isley belted a three-run shot to left scoring Emily Workman and Lexie Brock to cap the six-run frame.

After Coker cut the lead in half with another run in the fifth, things turned ugly in the top of the seventh as the Cobras struck for six runs of their own to snag a 10-8 lead. Jaclin Poole started with a run-scoring single before Dallas Sweat brought Coker to within one with a two-run double to left. As Rountree did to start her day, she would do again to end it smacking a three-run shot that just snuck over the wall in left to put the Cobras up two. Pfeiffer would mount a rally of their own in the seventh as Lindsey Russell slapped a solo shot to left making it 10-9, but with the bases loaded and one out, Coker was able to turn a game-ending double play to hang on by one.

Jackson and Russell each picked up three hits as Pfeiffer held a 14-13 hits advantage in the slugfest. Ellen would add two more hits and three more RBI to end her day 5-for-7 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.

The Lady Falcons will look to bounce back on Tuesday afternoon hosting Lock Haven in non-conference action beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Jack Ingram Field.
