GREENEVILLE, T.N. - Pfeiffer University picked up a 5-3 win in game two to earn a split with host Tusculum in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons slide to 13-20 on the year while the Pioneers, who notched a 12-4 win in the opener, move to 19-11.
Pfeiffer started game one with an early 1-0 lead thanks to a Jon Gray solo home run to left. The Pioneers used a four-run first and third to take their big lead in game one. Pfeiffer's other runs came in the third on a Cole McGraw double to center, a Gray sacrifice fly in the fifth and an Aarin Sharpe groundout in the seventh. Jacob Yates would end game one 3-for-5 while Gray and Johnny Brown, Jr. concluded with two.
In game two, Pfeiffer would break a 2-2 tie with three runs in the final frame, the top of the seventh, as Yates snapped the deadlock with a RBI single to left. The final two runs were scored courtesy of a Tusculum throwing error. The Pioneers would tack on a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final 5-3 margin. The Falcons other two runs would come in the third on Yates' first RBI single to left while Kyle Hackney delivered an infield single to short.
Yates and Gray each collected a pair of hits in game two supporting starter Ethan Greene's six innings of work allowing one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts. Jeff Barkley would pick up his fourth save of the season relieving Greene in the seventh.
Pfeiffer returns home to Joe Ferebee Field on Friday and Saturday hosting Georgia College. Friday's doubleheader and Saturday's series-finale will begin at 12:00 p.m.
