April 10, 2013
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Caleb Brophy (Mission Viejo, CA) put down a match-high 18 kills hitting .517 helping second-seeded Pfeiffer University to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-17) sweep over third-seeded Lees-McRae College in the semifinal round of the 2013 Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday. Coupled with Limestone’s win at Mount Olive, the Falcons will host the Saints in the championship match on Saturday (time TBA). Pfeiffer improves to 16-8 on the season while the Bobcats end the year at 18-13.
Tied at 10 in the opening set, a Bobcat attack error followed by back-to-back aces from David Specian (Loxahatchee, FL) put the Falcons up three while burning a Lees-McRae timeout. Pfeiffer would maintain the advantage through the remainder of the set pulling away late with two more Specian aces and a pair of kills from Brophy. Eric Edelman (Henrietta, NY) would throw down the final two Pfeiffer kills in set one claiming a 25-18 and 1-0 match lead.
In the second, Lees-McRae would hold a 17-12 lead on a John Lucas (Cincinnati, OH) kill while three more Brophy kills over a four-play span would start the Pfeiffer comeback. Brophy would get it to 19-17 on another one of his 18 kills while later serving up an ace to erase the deficit squaring the match at 19 and forcing another Bobcats timeout. After Joshua Jones (Christmas, FL) gave Lees-McRae a 23-21 on one of his eight kills, Brophy and Specian delivered two-straight kills while the final Brophy kill and a serving error by Lees-McRae completed the comeback 25-23 giving the Falcons a 2-1 match lead.
Pfeiffer would carry set two’s momentum into the third and final set as Brophy extended the early lead to 10-7 until a Matt Harpenau (Cincinnati, OH) ace for the Bobcats made it 13-12. Micah Bortner (Dallastown, PA) and Kyle Mariano (Kendall Park, NJ) would push the lead to 18-13 each registering a kill while two final Brophy kills, another Specian ace and kill from Bortner completed the sweep sending the Falcons into Saturday’s championship match.
As a team, the Falcons would hit .400 in the match led by Brophy and his 18 kills. Specian would pick up 39 assists in the win while libero Mark Hess (Lebanon, PA) had a match-high nine digs. Jones and Lucas would each lead the Bobcats with eight kills apiece.
