Results vs. Tusculum (2009-02-24 14:30:00)

Misenhiemer, NC -- Tuesday afternoon saw Pfeiffer baseball overcome a 3-2 deficit in the eighth inning to prevail over the visiting Pioneers of Tusculum College. Pfeiffer improves to 11-5-1 with the win, while Tusculum falls to 8-7.Tusculum jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first off Falcon starter Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC). With two outs Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, NY) reached on a walk and Sean Cotten (Mooresville, NC) followed with a homerun to centerfield.
Pfeiffer was held in check until the third when Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) singled to left off Pioneer pitcher Taylor Rakes (Norcross, GA) and with two outs Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) launched his third homerun of the year. The blast tied the score at 2-2.
The Falcons had an opportunity to take the lead in the third when Will Davis (New London, NC) led off with a double to right-center but was stranded at third after three consecutive fly outs.
The game remained gridlocked at 2-2 until the eighth. With two outs Aaron Hudgins (Kingsport, TN) reached on an error and Ricky Feliz (Miami, FL) followed with an RBI double. This put the Pioneers up 3-2, but their lead was short lived.
In the bottom of the inning, Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) and Shoemaker reached on one-out walks. Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) singled home Strickland and Davis followed with an RBI groundout. Then, with two-outs and two strikes on him, Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) connected for an RBI single that scored Pou, giving the Falcons a 5-3 lead. Andy Oliver (Cornelius, NC) came in and pitched a perfect ninth for Pfeiffer.
Fogleman picked up the win for Pfeiffer; he is now 4-0. He went eight strong innings giving up two earned runs while striking out seven. Oliver picked up the save by pitching the ninth and striking out two of the three batters he faced.
At the plate, Pfeiffer was led by Shoemaker (1-2 with two RBIs and two walks), Pou Davis, Dunn, and Lyon each added a hit for the Falcons.
Rob Currie (St. Charles, IL) took the loss for the Pioneers and in relief he went 2/3 of an inning, giving up two runs.
As for the offense, it was led by Sean Finucane (Cortland, NY), who was 2-3. Feliz Grabowski and Cotten all added a hit apiece.
The Falcons return to the field when they travel to Limestone for a weekend series starting Saturday at 12-noon. They return home next Wednesday to host UNC-Pembroke at 2:30 PM.
