Easley excels during FIL World Cup

OSHAWA, CANADA – During the summer, most coaches try to have a relaxing offseason and recharge their batteries for the challenges of the upcoming year. Pfeiffer women’s lacrosse coach Dawn Easley used her summer to represent the Haudenosaunee Nation women’s lacrosse team in the FIL World Cup and led the team to a seventh-place finish.

Easley was named the player of the match in the contest against Ireland on July 17 as she scored a game-high four goals and had two draw controls, propelling her team to a 19-3 victory. Easley tallied a goal in each of the team’s first six contests and finished the competition with 11 goals, two assists, five ground balls, and 14 draw controls in eight games.

The 10-day competition began on July 11 and pool play wrapped up on July 16. Haudenosaunee finished with a 4-1 record, earning the eighth seed in tournament play. By knocking off #9 Ireland in the opening round of tournament competition, Easley’s squad earned a matchup with the #1 seed, USA. Haudenosaunee fell to America, who eventually went on to win the championship, and faced Wales in consolation play.  The two teams played as evenly as possible, before Wales survived with a 15-14 victory and would take fifth-place in the tournament.

The seventh-place finish was a vast improvement on their 2009 showing in which the team finished in 11th. Haudenosaunee’s five victories came against Sweden, Hong Kong, Germany, Austria and the aforementioned Ireland. They outscored opponents 110-15 in their five wins.

“To be able to play against teams around the world was an inspiring experience,” said Easley. “I learned a lot from playing against different countries and saw a bunch of different styles of play.”

Easley led the Lady Falcons to a 14-3 record and the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals last season and will be entering her sixth year as head coach in 2013-14.
