15th Ranked Lander Scores In Final Moments to Tie Pfeiffer
August 28, 2013
GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Pfeiffer University men’s soccer team played the 15th ranked Lander Bearcats to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons held the lead most of the match but Lander tied the contest with only three minutes remaining to salvage a tie. Pfeiffer ends the pre-season without a loss in three contests and now turns its attention to the regular season opener next Thursday at USC-Aiken at 7:30 p.m.
The Falcons scored first when a corner kick from Aldo Ramirez got through to Seth Dey at the far post and Dey beat the Bearcats keeper. Pfeiffer held the lead the rest of the first half and took the one-goal advantage into the break.
25 minutes into the second half, Lander tied the game but Pfeiffer responded. On a long throw from Dey, which was redirected by Yogi Janes, Nathan Regis converted to give Pfeiffer the 2-1 lead. In the closing moments, Lander scored from just outside the box to knot the game at two.
“They are an exceptional, well-coached team,” said Pfeiffer Head Coach Bob Reasso. “They had more of the ball in the first half but our guys executed and played at a higher level in the second half. We have played very good competition in the preseason and the guys have responded.”
Lander, who won the PBC last season and was voted to win it again this year, was coming off a 12-3-2 campaign last season, including a 7-1-1 mark in conference play. However, the Falcons gave them all they could handle and end the pre-season slate with an impressive 1-0-2 record. Pfeiffer also played Division I Presbyterian to a 1-1 draw and defeated Greensboro by a final of 1-0.
“All the credit goes to the team,” Reasso said. “They have worked very hard to get ready for the season. We have a very difficult start to the year with six of our first seven games on the road, but the guys have done an incredible job thus far. We are excited for the start of the season.”
