Lady Falcons Fall to Belmont Abbey in Home Opener

by Paul Horner

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, NC - Despite a season-high 12 kills performance from sophomore Brianna Jones, the Pfeiffer University women's volleyball team fell to Belmont Abbey College 3-1 in front of 300 fans at Merner Gym Friday night.  Pfeiffer falls to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas play while the Crusaders improve to 2-1 in the conference and 8-3 on the season.  The match was the first home contest for the Lady Falcons following a 12 game road swing to open the 2013 season and the opening contest of the Falcons Alumni Weekend.

The Lady Falcons were plagued with errors in the first two games of the match, dropping game one 18-25 and game two 21-25.  Pfeiffer put up negative hitting percentages in each of the first two frames despite leading the Crusaders in the kill column 22-13 by the end of game two.  The Lady Falcons were also efficient on defense in games one and two, besting Belmont in the dig column 29-22 by the end of the second game.  Unfortunately, errors were the real story of the first two games and heading into the break, Pfeiffer had amassed 23 attack errors and seven service errors accounting for 30 of the Crusaders' points in games one and two.

Game three however, would be a completely different story for the Lady Falcons.  Following an ace by freshman Haley Denny, Pfeiffer took the lead 8-6 and never looked back, besting the Crusaders 25-21 to take game three.  The Lady Falcons boasted a .414 hitting percentage in the third frame behind solid performances by Jones and senior Milana Mervosh.  Mervosh would finish the match with eight marks in the kill column, even with freshman Shelby Younger who also had eight.

Pfeiffer would eventually surrender game four to the Crusaders, 15-25.  Despite the loss, the Lady Falcons would boast match leaders in almost every category.  Jones had top marks in the kill column as sophomore Emily Wall bested all players with 26 assists.  On the defensive side of the ball Denny finished the match with 17 digs, enough for top marks over both squads.

The Lady Falcons return to action when they welcome conference foe King University to Misenheimer on October 1st.
