Late Penalty Kick Sinks Men's Soccer

Box Score

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – A penalty kick with 44.5 seconds remaining in regulation gave Mount Olive a 2-1 victory over the Pfeiffer men’s soccer team. Hyago Matielo converted the free chance to give the Trojans the late win.

The match appeared to be heading into overtime when Pfeiffer was whistled for a late, controversial foul for the second consecutive match. Pfeiffer freshman goalkeeper Nicolas Dulac did his best to stop the attempt, but Matielo beat him for his second goal of the season.

Mount Olive (1-8, 1-2 Conference Carolinas) got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute when Louis Gorman scored from 35 yards out. The Trojans took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Falcons (3-6-1, 1-4) evened the score in the 76th minute on a perfectly crafted goal. Corey Davis’ header off a throw-in knotted the score.

“The schedule did us no favors today,” said First-Year Head Coach Bob Reasso. “We played a hard conference game on Thursday and had to travel. They were the better team in the first half, but we were better in the second half. We showed a lot of courage battling back but you could tell we played two days ago.”

The Falcons will return to action on Oct. 9 when they travel to Chowan for a 4:30 p.m. match. Following that contest, the Falcons will finish the season with six of their last seven matches at home.
