Men's and Women's Swimming Compete at Carolinas Invite

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Behind three top-five finishes in the men's relay events and two top-five finishes in the women's relay events, the Pfeiffer University men's and women's swimming teams took second and third place respectively at the Carolinas Invite this evening.  The Falcons also had 21 top-five finishes in the men's individual heats as well as eight top-five finishes in the women's individual heats.

The effort by the men's team was led by the freshman duo of Dima Turkin and Dmitry Kozlov.  Turkin had first place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke and the 100 yard butterfly, and Kozlov tallied first place finishes in the 500 yard freestyle and the 100 yard IM.  Turkin also contributed a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 53.63 seconds.  Junior Matt Burns got in on the action with a second place finish of his own in the 50 yard breaststroke with a time of 27.56 seconds.

The showing by the women's team was as equally impressive, boasting a first place finish by sophomore Kate Galichenko in the 100 yard butterfly.  Galichenko's time of 1:00.73 was almost three whole seconds faster than Converse's Laura Dixon who had to settle for second place in the event.  Galichenko also picked up a second place finish in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 27.97 seconds only four-tenths of a second slower than the first place finisher.  The women's team also enjoyed solid contributions from sophomore Jessica Burgess who finished second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.74, and senior Jillian Kniffen who put up a third place finish of 1:03.55 in the 100 yard IM.

As a unit, the men's 200 yard freestyle relay team consisting of Turkin, Kozlov, Vali Kaufmann, and Ethan Garrison finished second with a time of 1:29.19.  The women were not to be outdone however, opening the day's competition with a third place finish in the 200 yard medley relay.  The women's relay team posted a time of 1:55.56 and consisted of Burgess, Kniffen, Galichenko, and Cydney Donnelly.

Both teams return to the pool on October 26, 2013 when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on rivals Converse and Lenoir-Rhyne.
