Women's Soccer Too Much for Converse on Road; Extend Win Streak to Five
October 19, 2013
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Pfeiffer University women's soccer team grabbed a crucial conference victory this evening, defeating Converse College 1-0 on the road. The triumph increases Pfeiffer's win streak to five, bumping their record to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in Conference Carolinas competition. The Valkyries fall to 8-7 and 3-3 in conference play.
The lone tally came in the 40th minute of play when freshman Brae Buster slipped a beautifully placed shot past Converse keeper Gabie Chamberland for her eighth goal of the season. Manufacturing her own breakaway, Buster received the ball just past midfield, dribbled through a bank of four Converse players and beat Chamberland giving the Lady Falcons the lead for good. Buster's goal moves her into third place among conference players for total goals this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior goalkeeper Natalie Marsh recorded her fourth shutout in five games and the Lady Falcons are 6-0 with her minding the Pfeiffer net. Tonight's performance gives Marsh a .944 save percentage, good enough for first place among Conference Carolinas' goalkeepers. Marsh has only allowed one opposing team to score in Pfeiffer's last five contests, and leads the conference in the goals against average category with 0.18 on the season.
With all conference games over for the weekend, the win moves the Lady Falcons into second place just behind Lees-McRae.
Pfeiffer has two days to rest before they host conference rival Barton at N.E. Lefko Field. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. and will be the first game of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team.
