Younger's Monster Effort Not Enough For Women's Volleyball; Fall to North Greenville, 3-2
November 1, 2013
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Freshman Shelby Younger had a career-high 22 kills, but the Pfeiffer women's volleyball team (7-19, 4-10 CC) fell to North Greenville (7-23, 5-10 CC) by a final score of 3-2 on Friday night. The 22 kills were the most of any Lady Falcon so far this season and Younger finished with a .402 hitting percentage. Brianna Jones added 14 kills for Pfeiffer who have been defeated by the Crusaders twice in a seven day span.
Rachel Burts paced the visitors with 12 kills and Yomi Adeyeye added 10 of her own.
For the match, Pfeiffer held a 59-40 advantage in kills and a 51-35 lead in digs, but had four more hitting errors, five more ball handling errors and six more service errors than the Crusaders.
North Greenville stormed out of the gates, scoring the first four points of the opening set before Pfeiffer rallied behind Nicole Mueller's serving to take the next eight points. The Crusaders would answer with another spurt, scoring five unanswered to reclaim the lead. Pfeiffer trailed 24-19 but mounted a comeback to even the set at 24. However, North Greenville took the next two points, and the set, 26-24.
The Crusaders also took the second set, by a final of 25-20, despite the Lady Falcons posting a .455 hitting percentage.
Despite the deficit, Pfeiffer showed a lot of heart and rallied to win sets three and four by scores of 25-15 and 25-22, forcing the decisive fifth set. It looked like the Lady Falcons would emerge victorious as they ran out to a 7-4 lead. The Crusaders would answer by scoring 11 of the final 15 points to steal the victory.
The loss doesn't tarnish the effort of Younger, whose monster performance almost single-handedly gave Pfeiffer the victory.
The Lady Falcons .271 hitting percentage was their highest total of the season, as was the 59 kills. Pfeiffer's 13 service aces tied a season high.
The Lady Falcons don't have much time to rest, getting back to Conference play tomorrow at noon as they host Erskine. Following that match, Pfeiffer takes on Emmanuel at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
