Men Sixth, Women Ninth At the Fall Frenzy; Kozlov Defeats Olympian in 500-Freestyle

CHARLOTTE, N.C . – Six school records fell at the Fall Frenzy as the Pfeiffer swimming teams enjoyed a stellar competition. The Falcons were led by an outstanding performance from freshman Dmitry Kozlov who won the 500-freestyle over Marko Blazevski of Wingate, who is a defending NCAA champion and a 2012 Olympian. The men's team finished the event in sixth place, while the women came in ninth.

On the first day of the competition, Kozlov defeated Blazevski by over two seconds in the event, finishing in a time of 4:33.24 and shaving over five seconds off his prelim time. Kozlov was trailing after the first 300 yards, but kicked it into another gear. His final four splits were nearly a full second better than the former Olympian as the freshman got stronger as the event went on. Joshua Shaffer of the College of Charleston finished in third place.

The men’s 200-yard freestyle team of Dima Turkin, Valentin Kaufmann, Kozlov and Ethan Garrison finished fifth with a finals time of 1:25.42, besting their seed time by 3.44 seconds. The same four some finished the 400-yard medley relay in fifth place, finishing in a time of 3:25.16.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Turkin excelled, finishing in fifth place in a time of 21.18, while the freshman took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 48.35. Kozlov also took home a second place finish in the 400-yard individual medley as his time of 58.17 again put him one spot better than Blazevski. Kaufmann recorded a 'B' cut finish in the 200-yard freestyle with his time of 1:42.48, placing 10th in the event.  

On the women’s side, Kate Galichenko took home eighth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.80. The 400-yard medley relay team of Jessica Burgess, Jillian Kniffen, Galichenko and Morgan Dionne posted a strong time of 4:12.43 and erased nearly five seconds off their seed time. Galichenko finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.33 and a 'B' cut finish in the 200-yard butterfly, ending the event in 12th place.

Queens won the men's competition with a team score of 1443.5, followed by the College of Charleston and Wingate.

The College of Charleston earned the first place finish on the women's side, with a score of 1492. Gardner-Webb and Queens finished second and third respectively.
