Women's Basketball Drops Home Contest to Benedict
December 20, 2013
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Despite a 15-point effort from junior center Lauren White, the Pfeiffer University women's basketball team lost to Benedict College on their home court Friday night, 60-51. The game was the last non-conference matchup for the Falcons for the 2013-2014 season and the last for Pfeiffer before the new year. With the loss, Pfeiffer falls to 1-9 on the season with Benedict improving to 6-3 overall.
Benedict jumped out to an early 12-4 lead in the first half behind hot shooting from Santera Grooms. Grooms had nine of Benedict's 12 points in the first five minutes of the contest, which put her on track to finish with a game-high 19. Grooms also boasted the game's only double-double, adding 12 rebounds to her 38 minute performance. Despite Benedict's early push, Pfeiffer was determined to defend their home turf. The Falcons answered with a 10-2 run of their own to tie the match at 14 apiece with 13:08 to play in the first half. Behind solid contributions from junior guard Carter Williams and freshman Alexis Stallard down the front stretch, Pfeiffer traded buckets with the visiting and went into the locker only down nine points.
The second half clearly belonged to the Falcons, but would prove to be a battle. With 21 of the game's 31 fouls being called in the second half alone, it was clear that neither team was backing down. While Benedict's Grooms was the story of the first half, White chose the second half to shine and put up 13 of her 15 points in the second frame alone. The Falcons led in second half shooting percentage 38.7% to Benedict's 33.3% as well as second half shooting from the charity stripe, 60% to 54.5%.
Pfeiffer was outrebounded 46-29 for the game but led the way in total steals 10-7. Out of Benedict's 46 total rebounds, 29 would come from the defensive glass. Benedict boasted three players in double figure scoring, and a 32% three-point shooting percentage. Following the contest, Falcons Coach Roy Dow said, "Despite our record, we are definitely making progress as the season continues."
The Falcons will now take some time to enjoy the holidays with their families and rest up for the new year. Pfeiffer returns to action on January 4, 2014 as the opening act of a doubleheader with the men's team when they begin their conference slate against King University. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. in Merner Gym.
