Strong Second Half From Lees-McRae Too Much For Women's Basketball
January 11, 2014
BANNER ELK, N.C. - Alexis Stallard paced the Falcons offensively for the second straight game, but the Pfeiffer women's basketball team (2-11, 1-4 CC) fell in a close contest at Lees-McRae (6-3, 3-2) by a final score of 57-53. Stallard scored 18 points and hit three shots from long distance but the Bobcats outscored Pfeiffer 36-25 in the second half to grab the victory.
Lauren Lewis scored 14 points for Lees-McRae and Kerri Belcher added 13. Lewis scored 12 points in the second half as the Bobcats hit 50 percent of their second half field goals to complete the comeback.
Carter Williams added 12 points for Pfeiffer to go with four rebounds and three assists. Pfeiffer was without the Conference Carolinas leading shot blocker in Lauren White, forcing Head Coach Roy Dow to go with a smaller lineup. Amy Steller helped to offset the loss of White as she grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, including three offensive boards.
Pfeiffer's defense dominated the first 20 minutes as they held Lees-McRae to 29.6 shooting from the field and a 0-for-8 performance from behind the arc. Pfeiffer forced 10 first half turnovers and a three point basket by Hollie Boggs with four seconds to go gave Pfeiffer a 28-21 lead going into the break.
The second half belonged to Lewis and the Bobcats. Lewis shook off a 1-for-7 shooting line in the first half and went 4-for-5 from three point range in the second half. Each team committed 12 second half turnovers but the Bobcats overcame their turnovers with long range shooting, going 5-for-8 in the final 20 minutes.
Pfeiffer's seven point lead was erased with a 14-6 run to start the half by Lees-McRae. The Bobcats pushed the lead to 45-40, their largest of the second half, with 8:06 to play. Stallard responded with back-to-back three's to give Pfeiffer a 46-45 lead. After a pair of Lees-McRae free throws, Williams buried a three to go ahead 49-47. However, Lewis responded with a three of her own to reclaim the lead. Carlisha Holivay knocked down a jumper to grab a 51-50 lead for the Falcons with just over four minutes to go. However, Lees-McRae outscored Pfeiffer 7-2 the rest of the way and Lewis' last three at the 1:06 mark put the Falcons away.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Wednesday evening when they host North Greenville at 5:30 p.m.
