Men's Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Limestone on the Road
January 21, 2014
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Despite having two players knock down double-figure kills, the Pfeiffer University men's volleyball team (0-1 overall and 0-1 Conference Carolinas) fell to conference rival Limestone 3-0 in their season opener. With the win, the Saints improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Two of the three games were decided by three or less points and the final score was clearly not indicative of the overall matchup.
Game one of the match was extremely close and included five lead changes and ten total ties. Both teams traded points during the first game and finding themselves down 22-19, the Falcons began to mount a comeback. Following a kill by junior Joe Supko, a beautiful service ace by junior Michael Brewer, and a monster kill by junior Sonny Hirini, the Falcons found themselves tied with the home team, 22-22. A ball-handling error by Limestone's Nick Wildes put Pfeiffer up by one point, however, the Falcons would be unable to maintain the momentum and the Saints grabbed game one, 25-23.
Game two was all Limestone as they went up 2-0 on the Falcons following a 25-17 victory. The Falcons came out of the break with a renewed sense of urgency and started game three much like they started the match. Home court advantage appeared to play a factor in this one however, and the Saints clinched game three 25-22. Hirini finished the match with 13 kills, and led all players. Hirini was closely followed in the kill column by junior Kyle Landrigan who finished the match with ten. Landrigan was also one dig shy of a double-double, finishing with nine. Junior David Specian led all players with 28 assists and sophomore Kevin Ecklund led all players in the dig category with twelve for the match.
The Falcons return to action on January 25 when they travel to Bristol, T.N. to take on King. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
