April 4, 2009Wilson, NC -- The No. 26 Pfeiffer Falcons and Barton College Bulldogs split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Saturday. Pfeiffer won the first game 11-10 and Barton prevailed in the nightcap 12-5.
Game 1 – Pfeiffer 11, Barton 10
In game one Pfeiffer jumped ahead early with a Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) two-run homerun in the top of the first to give Pfeiffer a 2-0 lead.
Falcon pitcher Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC) held the Bulldogs until the fourth. Barton started the inning with back to back doubles and a RBI single by Barrett Martin (Willow Springs, NC) that tied the score at 2-2.
Barton went ahead in the fifth on a three-run homerun by Wesley Francis (Blair, VA). Pfeiffer fought back to 6-5 after scoring two in the top half of the sixth. Following singles by Will Davis (New London, NC) and Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC), Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) brought both home with a two-out two-run single to left.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the bottom half of the inning when Aaron Watkins (Newport News, VA) had a RBI double and Will Johnson (Rocky Mount, NC) added a SAC fly.
Pfeiffer battled to take the lead in the eighth. With the bases loaded Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) singled up the middle to score one run and then Lyon connected for a grand-slam to bring the score to 9-7 with the Pfeiffer advantage.
The Falcons tacked on two more in the ninth, the first on an RBI double by Davis that scored Pou and the second when Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) scored on a wild pitch.
Barton made it interesting by cutting the lead to 11-10 with the bases loaded, but closer Ben Beard (Huntersville, NC) forced Chris Rawlings (Charlotte, NC) to fly out to right field to close out the game.
Nick Fogleman picked up his ninth win of the season. He went 8 1/3 innings giving up seven earned runs on seven hits. Nick Nigito (Whitehall, PA) picked up the loss in relief for Barton going two innings and giving up five earned runs.
Will Davis and Ethan Marsh had three hits apiece for Pfeiffer, while Preston Lyon added six RBI.
Game 2 – Pfeiffer 5, Barton 12
Pfeiffer once again jumped ahead early in game two when Davis doubled home Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) and Pou.
Barton cut the lead in half in the second with a solo homerun by Ryan McCleney (Chadbourn, NC). Then the Bulldogs erupted for six runs in the third. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by McCleney and a two-run homerun by Kramer Sneed (Winterville, NC). After the inning the Bulldogs led 7-2.
Barton added three more in the fourth after a RBI single by Francis and then a two-run homerun by Zach Boyette (Marion, VA). Pfeiffer tried to come back in the fifth when Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) cut the lead to 10-4 with a two-run blast to left center.
Barton tacked on two more runs in the sixth when Jonathan Nichols (Smithfield, NC) connected for a two-run homerun to center. The Falcons tried to start a rally in the seventh after Ryan Brown (Concord, NC) and Strickland started the inning with singles. After a strikeout, Pou brought Brown home with a single of his own, but Pfeiffer was done there and Barton won 12-5.
Jonathan McDaniel (Mocksville, NC) took the loss for Pfeiffer. He went 3 1/3 innings giving up nine runs on eight hits. Sneed picked up the win for the Bulldogs by going a complete game giving up four runs.
Brown led the Falcon bats by picking up two hits. Davis and Strickland added two RBI apiece for Pfeiffer.
