Pfeiffer Baseball Drops Second Contest to Catawba

Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University baseball team traveled to Catawba on Wednesday afternoon for the second and final chapter of an in-season home and home series.  It was the second time in as many days that the two squads had faced each other, with the Indians repeating the performance from yesterday and picking up the victory against Pfeiffer, 7-4.  The loss drops the Falcons to 5-5 overall for the season and with the win Catawba improves to 3-7 on the year.  Pfeiffer has now lost five of its last six games, and has played all but one of its games this season in enemy territory.

Offensively the Falcons put up impressive numbers picking up four runs on 12 hits, had four RBIs and left seven men on base.  The Indians had similar stats for the matchup with the major difference coming in the run column.  Catawba grabbed seven runs on 10 hits, had six RBIs and left ten men on base.  Notably, Pfeiffer also had 11 men in scoring position throughout the game but were only able to send four of those runners home.

On the defensive side, junior Josh Branch (1-2) picked up the pitching loss for the Falcons, and Pfeiffer hurler Tyler Lequire led all players with four strikeouts.  The win was awarded to Catawba's Shaefer Shepard (1-0) who finished with three strikeouts of his own.

Catawba led most of the game, however in the top of the fifth it looked like the tide might be turning for the Falcons.  With Pfeiffer finding themselves down 3-1, freshman Tanner Mathis singled up the middle bringing in redshirt-senior Tyler Summers and senior Jon Gray, tying the game at three apiece.  Mathis finished the game with his first collegiate double (from the fourth inning), adding two hits and two RBIs to his effort.

The Falcons have a few days to rest before the travel to Myrtle Beach to compete in the Northeast Challenge.  They take on Southern New Hampshire on February 21st with the first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
