Softball Splits Two Games at Catawba Invitational

Game 1 Box Score   Game 2 Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. - Following day one of the Catawba Invitational, the Pfeiffer University softball team is looking at a 1-1 record for the weekend.  In the first matchup, the Falcons held off a late surge by Brevard to pick up the victory, 5-4.  Pfeiffer took on Augusta State in their second contest of the afternoon and narrowly surrendered to the Jaguars, 1-0.  With the results of today’s games, the Falcons are now 4-5 overall.

In game one, Pfeiffer jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the third following back-to-back home runs.  Junior Julie Bullington knocked the pitch over the left field fence for the Falcons, picking up two RBIs with the homer.  Sophomore Jaclyn Boever stepped to the plate for Pfeiffer’s very next at-bat and sent the ball right back over the outfield wall for the Falcons’ second home run of the game.  Brevard followed Pfeiffer’s surge with a few runs of their own, picking up a single tally in the bottom of the third and three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead 4-3 going into the sixth inning.

The Falcons entered the sixth frame un-phased by Brevard’s offensive flare-up and following a two RBI double from senior Hannah Jackson, Pfeiffer took the lead for good, 5-4.  Jackson finished the game with three hits, leading all players.  The Falcons also had solid offensive performances from Boever who had two runs and two hits, and junior Lindsey Russell who had two hits of her own.

The game one win goes to sophomore Jessica Griffin (1-1) with freshman Sydney Poole picking up the first save of her collegiate softball career.  Brevard’s Jamie Hrobak (2-2) had six strikeouts, but couldn’t contain the Falcon bats and picked up the loss.

Pfeiffer’s second game of the day was a solid defensive battle, with both pitchers seeing the matchup all the way to the end.  Redshirt-sophomore Sam Jarmusch (1-3) picked up her third loss of the young season, and Augusta State’s Haley Birkle (3-3) was credited with the win.

Relying on her defense, Jarmusch and the Falcons held Augusta State hitless through the first two innings and scoreless through the first four.  Augusta State picked up the only run of the game for either squad in the bottom of the fifth when Erin Rozier singled to center field sending her teammate Hannah Vaughn home.

Pfeiffer finished with four hits on 21 at-bats and left five players on base.  Augusta State was almost identical with four hits on 20 at-bats and left six players on base.

The Falcons return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader when they take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 11:00 a.m. and tournament host Catawba at 1:00 p.m.
