Softball Drops Final Two Games at Catawba Invitational
February 23, 2014
SALISBURY, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University softball team didn't end the weekend quite the way they'd hoped, surrendering their final two contests of the Catawba Invitational. The Falcons gave up game one to Lenoir Rhyne 6-1, with the result improving Lenoir-Rhyne to 8-3 on the season. Game two belonged to the tournament hosts, as Pfeiffer dropped the contest 8-0 to Catawba in six innings as two Indian pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Following the second matchup, the Falcons overall record fell to 4-7 for the season and with the win Catawba improved to 6-1 overall.
In game one Pfeiffer found themselves in a hole early, as Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 6-0 lead following three run bursts in the first and third innings. The Falcons picked up a lone run of their own in the fourth, but were unable to get any closer to the leaders. Pfeiffer finished the game with only two hits on 24 at-bats, left five runners on base, and tallied a lone RBI. Freshman Rachel Crowder and sophomore Jaclyn Boever each had hits for the Falcons, with Boever picking up the team's only RBI. Freshman Kaitlin Macmillan (0-1) picked up the loss, while the win was credited to Brandi Hole (5-1).
Pfeiffer's offensive woes seemed to continue into the second game of the afternoon, as they could never seem to find their rhythm. Catawba put up a single run in the first followed by a four-run third frame, and capped off their victory with three tallies in the ninth. The Falcons were unable to get a hit despite 18 at-bats and left three runners on base.
Pfeiffer will look to snap their three-game losing skid when they return home for a double header on February 26th. The Falcons take on cross-town rival Queens with the first pitch of game one slated for 2:00 p.m.
