No. 11 Women's Lacrosse Upset by No. 13 Queens in Non-Conference Action
February 25, 2014
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Despite a solid offensive effort and a first-half hat trick from junior Kristi Korn, the No. 11 Pfeiffer women's lacrosse team fell to cross-town rival No. 13 Queens on Tuesday, 13-10. The loss is Pfeiffer's first of the fledgling season dropping their record to 2-1. With the win Queens improves to 3-1 overall.
Korn finished with a team-high four goals, her third coming with just 18 seconds left in the first half of competition. Also with a notable offensive performance for the Falcons was reigning Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse player of the week, junior Ashleigh Kassab. Kassab added two tallies in the contest giving her ten total for the season and boosting her average to over three per game. Also contributing two goals in the match for Pfeiffer was freshman Stephanie Athens.
The Falcons found themselves in a hole early as the visitors picked up two goals in the first five and a half minutes of play. Pfeiffer was determined to defend their home turf and quickly answered with two goals of their own. Korn picked up her first score of the afternoon less than a minute after Queens' second tally. Almost 30 seconds after Korn's goal, Kassab picked up her first of the day when she found herself wide open in front of the Queens net.
The Lions' Abigail Paulus seemed too much to handle for Pfeiffer however, and 20 seconds after the Falcons' equalizing goal, Paulus notched her third which started a flurry of goals from the visitors. Pfeiffer battled back and ended the first half only down by two to the visiting team. The second half would prove to be extremely close with Queens leading the second frame scoring 6-5 and ultimately ruining the home team's comeback hopes. Paulus led all players with six goals on the afternoon.
Pfeiffer returns to action on March 1st when they take on Regis in their second game of a three game home stand. Game time is set for noon.
