Baseball Takes Down Newberry in Non-Conference Play
March 5, 2014
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Behind a stingy defensive effort and an excellent offensive showing that included nine total hits, the Pfeiffer baseball team toppled visiting Newberry 5-2 Wednesday afternoon. The win brings the Falcons' overall record to 11-7 and with the loss Newberry falls to 12-9 on the season. The win on the mound went to junior Jesse Park who improves to 1-1 on the season and Newberry's Marshall Rentz picks up the loss falling to 0-1. Junior Dylan Norris earned his sixth save of the season with the Falcons' win this afternoon.
Pfeiffer took control early, picking up runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, and jumping out to a 3-0 lead over the visiting team. The Falcons' lone run in the second belonged to junior Anthony Allende when he smacked his team-leading second home run of the season over the center field fence. The fifth inning was fairly quiet, but in the top of the sixth Newberry began to battle back. The visitors put up two runs on three hits and pulled to within one tally of the home team, but Pfeiffer would not sit quiet for long. The Falcons would answer Newberry's surge with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to three. Pfeiffer's rock-solid defense would then hold Newberry to three straight scoreless innings and stave off any potential comeback.
Freshman Dylan Goodman led the Falcons offensively with a career-high three hits on the afternoon, picking up one RBI. Pfeiffer also received two hits from Allende and left six men on base when it was all said and done.
The Falcons return to action March 7th when they travel to Bristol, TN to take on conference rival King. The game is the first of three against the Tornado this weekend and the first pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
