Men's Volleyball Drops Home Game to Conference Leading Erskine
March 10, 2014
MISENHEIMER, NC - The Pfeiffer men's volleyball team (8-9, 5-3 CC) lost a crucial late season matchup with conference-leading Erskine (13-5, 9-1) by a final score of 3-1 on Monday night. The game was a makeup as the original game was snowed out in February. Pfeiffer took the first set before the Flying Fleet rallied to take the final three and win their ninth straight contest.
Junior David Specian dished out 43 assists in the contest and added seven digs.
Roberto Perez Vargas was the most productive player on the court, finishing with 20 kills and an eye-popping .667 hitting percentage. Corey Marks handed out 49 assists and Mike Kawa had five assisted blocks.
The first game was played at a very high level with Pfeiffer hitting .600 and Erskine finishing with a .500 mark. Hamilton's kill gave Pfeiffer an early 5-2 lead, but Erskine responded by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to take a 12-9 lead. Hirini's kill drew the Falcons even at 16 and the back-and-forth game would be tied four more times. With the game tied at 20, Pfeiffer scored three straight and five of six points, culminating in another kill from Hirini, to take the set 25-21.
However, Erskine was unfazed and took the final three games by scores of 19-25, 22-25 and 20-25 to record the victory.
Freshman Evan Blair missed the contest due to sickness, leaving Pfeiffer a little shorthanded.
With the win, Erskine moves a full three games ahead of Pfeiffer in the standings. Erskine only has four conference contests left making it hard for the Falcons to come away with the regular season crown.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to Mount Olive for a 7 p.m. matchup.
