Baseball Drops Non-Conference Bout to UNC Pembroke

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - It was a perfect day for a ball game, but the Pfeiffer University baseball team couldn't seem to get their offense going Tuesday afternoon, surrendering a non-conference matchup to UNC Pembroke.  Despite a comeback late in the fourth that would give Pfeiffer their only lead of the game, the Falcons dropped the contest 16-5 to the visiting Braves.  With the loss Pfeiffer falls to 14-8 on the season and UNC Pembroke improves 18-5 with the victory.

Following a scoreless first frame, the Braves were the first to put any points on the board, picking up a lone run in the top of the second.  The Falcons defense kept UNC Pembroke at bay in the third, throwing out a runner on his way to home plate and getting their pitcher out of an inning that finished with no runs on two hits and two men left on base.  Pfeiffer entered the fourth inning prepared to do some damage.  The Falcons tied up the contest when freshman Cody McKenzie smacked a single up the middle, scoring junior Anthony Allende from third, and picking up an RBI on the play.  Pfeiffer would take the lead on their very next at-bat when junior Dalton Lindley grounded into a double play sending senior Matt Wade home to score.  The inning would close with Pfeiffer clutching to a 2-1 lead on the visiting team.

UNC Pembroke's bats would come alive in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs off of five hits, and regaining the lead from the Falcons.  Pfeiffer would answer with a lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when senior Jon Gray scored off of a single down the right field line from redshirt-senior Tyler Summers.  UNC Pembroke would notch two more runs over the next three innings, extending their lead to seven runs heading into the bottom of the eighth.  In the eighth Pfeiffer got a few back from the Braves when freshman Dylan Goodman knocked a monster single to left field scoring both Summers and McKenzie, and picking up two RBIs on the play.  UNC Pembroke exploded again in the ninth with six runs on five hits, making the score 16-5 and sealing the Falcons' fate.

UNC Pembroke's Jordan Edgerton led all players in the hit column with five for the game.  Pfeiffer boasted three different players with two hits apiece and were led by Goodman in the RBI category.  Junior Josh Branch (1-3) picked up the loss for the Falcons with the win being credited to UNC Pembroke's Jordan Deloatch who remains undefeated on the season, 4-0.  Branch had three strikeouts on just over four innings pitched.

The Falcons return to action tomorrow when they welcome St. Andrews to Joe Ferebee Field for a 3:30 p.m. start.
