Baseball Survives Late Rally from Brevard; Win 7-5 in 10 innings

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. – Craig Jacobelli tossed five shutout innings on the mound as the Pfeiffer baseball team (16-11) withstood a furious comeback attempt by Brevard (12-15) to prevail 7-5 in 10 innings on a cold and windy Wednesday afternoon. The win puts Pfeiffer just two games shy of their win total from a year ago (18).

Jacobelli allowed only four base runners in his five innings of work, recording five fly outs, six ground outs and one strikeout on the afternoon. He left with the Falcons leading 4-0, however, the Tornados would erase a 5-2 deficit with a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

The Falcons secured the win with two runs in the top of the 10th as John Elwood’s infield single proved to be the game winner.

Tyler Summers and Anthony Allende each recorded multi-hit games from the three and four spots in the lineup respectively.

Pfeiffer scored the first four runs of the contest before the late comeback. The Falcons scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and then plated two in the sixth to secure the victory.

Brevard answered with four combined runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

The scoring started in the top of the fourth as Allende started the rally with a base hit to center field and Matt Wade drew a walk. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Kyle Hackney singled through the left side, scoring Allende.

Pfeiffer manufactured a run in the top of the fifth as Jon Gray walked to lead off the inning and then stole second base. Summers would knock him home with a solid base hit to left field.

Pfeiffer looked to be going down quietly in the sixth inning as the first two batters were retired. Kevin Price ignited the two-out rally with a base hit and Gray followed with a single. A walk loaded the bases for Summers who was hit by a pitch, driving in his second run of the game. Gray would come around to score on a passed ball, giving Pfeiffer a four-run lead.

Brevard battled back with a run in the sixth and eighth innings. The Tornados would threaten for more in the bottom of the eighth, but Hunter Jobe got Brock Helton to fly out with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Pfeiffer added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double from Allende. However, Dylan Norris would allow the first three base runners to reach in the bottom of the ninth inning and Brevard pushed across three runs on three hits in their final at bat.

Price and Gray got on base to start the 10th, with Price scoring on Elwood’s single to the second basemen. Gray would score on an error by the first basemen and account for Pfeiffer’s seventh and final run of the game.

Norris was credited with the win on the mound to improve his season record to 1-1. Gray scored three runs and Price scored twice. Allende and Summers combined to go 6-for-10 with two runs and three RBI’s.

Brian Hooks suffered the loss for the Tornados. Matthew Proffitt went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI from the leadoff spot.

Pfeiffer returns to action with a three-game weekend series at home against North Greenville. The first game is scheduled to take place at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Joe Ferebee Field.
