SAVANNAH, Ga. – Josh Wilson’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled the No. 25-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates to a 6-5 win over visiting Pfeiffer on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
The Pirates (27-13) entered the bottom of the ninth all tied at 5 when Tyler Evans was hit by a pitch from Pfeiffer reliever Tim Peele (1-3) leading off the inning. Chris Russell came on in relief of Peele for the Falcons (24-21) and retired Truman Marek on a fly ball to left, but Kenny Cail reached on a fielder’s choice when Pfeiffer third baseman Hayes Hinson’s throw to second was not in time to catch Evans. A wild pitch from Russell moved Evans and Cail up a base, forcing Pfeiffer to intentionally walk Eric Hudson and load the bases for Wilson, who launched a drive over right fielder Ryan Harju’s head for the game-winning hit. The win extended AASU’s current streak to four, while snapping Pfeiffer’s six-game win streak.
Ninth-inning heroics were the last thing on the Pirates’ minds, however, when they jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first four innings. Brad Bohannon tripled in a run in the third inning, then Evans hit an RBI single and an error allowed another run to score for three runs in the frame. The Pirates added two more in the fourth on RBI singles by Evans and Marek.
Pfeiffer came back with a single run in the fifth on an RBI groundout, then Kyle Pugh curled a shot just inside the right field foul pole for a three-run home run in the sixth. The Falcons tied the game in the top of the seventh on a Bryan Braxton RBI double.
Jeremy Horst (2-0) hurled 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to pick up the win for the Pirates, while Peele gave up one run in two innings to take the loss.
The Pirates and the Falcons will meet again on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Pirate Field to wrap up the brief two-game set.
