Queens Scores 13 Second Half Goals to Upset No. 10 Falcons

Box Score

MATTHEWS, NC – Queens (9-4) used 13 second half goals to defeat No. 10 Pfeiffer (8-3) in men’s lacrosse action at the Matthews SportsPlex on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 14-8. Garrett Chan and Casey Hock combined for 10 goals for the Royals who handed Pfeiffer their second straight defeat.

The game was a tale of two halves as the first 30 minutes turned into a defensive battle. Queens struck first just 1:05 into the first quarter to take the early lead. Neither team would score the rest of the quarter and Pfeiffer was held without a goal until the 2:07 mark of the second half. Derek Thomas took a feed from Spencer Allen to break the scoreless drought and tie the game at 1, which was how the half would end.

The second half turned into an offensive slugfest. Chan and the Royals converted with the man advantage 1:40 into the third quarter to reclaim the lead. Pfeiffer’s Matt Michaeli answered 1:06 later and Chan scored again at the 11:12 mark. Thomas again netted the equalizer, less than five minutes into the third stanza. The final 10 minutes of the period belonged to the Royals who outscored Pfeiffer 5-2 to take an 8-5 advantage into the fourth period.

The lead would be extended to 9-5 1:05 into the fourth as Jimmy Chickerella scored for the Royals. Spencer Allen brought the Falcons within three scores at the 13:27 mark, but Pfeiffer would get no closer. Again, Queens closed the quarter by scoring five of the final seven goals to take the 14-8 victory.

Steven Tilmon led Pfeiffer with three goals and Thomas added two scores. Robert Hope and Tucker Hammock each caused three turnovers and Khalid Stukes paced Pfeiffer with nine ground balls.

Pfeiffer out shot Queens 43-34 in the contest and held a 28-24 lead in ground balls. Each team won 13 face offs in the matchup but Queens was more efficient with the man advantage. The Royals went 3-for-7 in extra man opportunities, while the Falcons failed to convert on two chances.

Hayden Kirk dropped to 7-3 in goal with seven saves.

Today marked Pfeiffer’s last home contest of the season, which was forced to the Matthews SportsPlex due to unplayable field conditions. The Falcons return to action on Saturday as they travel to take on St. Leo at noon.
