Softball Handles North Greenville in Conference Tournament Opener

Box Score

BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University softball team (18-23-1) pulled off an impressive upset Friday morning, toppling the third seed North Greenville Crusaders (27-15) in the first round of Conference Carolinas tournament action.  The Falcons entered the game as the underdog, drawing the sixth seed in the tournament and will move on to face the winner of the King/Barton matchup set for 5:00 pm today.  Despite the ranking, Pfeiffer rose to the occasion, embracing the clean slate atmosphere of tournament-style play.

The first three innings of play were a defensive battle, with neither team finding pay dirt heading into the fourth frame.  Despite the three inning drought, Pfeiffer's bats exploded in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three North Greenville errors and putting two monster runs on the board.  Senior Hannah Jackson picked up the first run for the Falcons following a throwing error by North Greenville.  On the very next play, junior Sadie Saine scored on a throwing error by the Crusaders' pitcher.  Pfeiffer put up two hits in the inning leaving two runners on base.  The Falcons drew their third and final run in the top of the sixth when senior Celia Dew rocked a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for her third home run of the season.

The Falcons out-hit their opponents seven to four, spreading their attack across seven batters in the lineup.  Redshirt-sophomore Sam Jarmusch picked up the win and her second shutout of the season, improving to 8-11 on the year.  Jarmusch's North Greenville counterpart, Rachel Glazebrook (15-7) was credited with the loss, despite striking out 11 batters in the effort.

Pfeiffer now awaits the winner of the King/Barton contest which has currently been postponed due to severe weather in the area.
