Cross Country Impressive in Exhibition Meet

Columbia, SC- The Pfeiffer men's and women's cross country teams opened up their season racing in the USC Gamecock Athletics Carolina Invitational on August 30, 2014.
Nine men and nine women ran the course at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. The men’s team had a solid team race, placing 3rd overall. Sophomore Chris Laughlin was the Falcons top runner, crossing the finish line of the 5-kilometer course in 12th place with a time of 17:27 with Dillon Edwards right behind him in 13th place with a time of 17:38. The third spot was held by Freshman Brandon Boyd in his first race as a Falcon with a solid finish of 17:57 in 14th place. The top seven was rounded off with Junior Henry Furman with a finish of 18:12, Sophomore Josh Wilhoit at 18:32, Junior Brandon Garren at 18:41 and Junior Nathan Jarman at 18:59. Other Falcons competing in the season opener were Freshmen Zach Perry finishing with a time of 19:19 and Kennard Massie at 20:24.
The women also had solid performances, placing 6th in the Invite. Junior Cori Newton was the top runner for the women’s team, coming in 11th place with a finishing time of 20:41. Freshman Leah MacAulay in her first race as a Falcon came in second for the team with a time of 22:15. Junior Trista Byers, had an outstanding season opener holding the third spot for the team with a finishing time of 22:43. Next for the Lady Falcons was Freshman Kylie Spencer with a time of 23:02. In her first ever 5-kilometer race, Freshman Sam Smith now has an impressive career personal best of 23:04. Rounding out the rest of the top 7 were Junior Alex Crouch with a time of 23:28 and Freshman Jayde Kemp at 23:52. Other Lady Falcons finishing the race were Sophomores Christie Baran with a time of 24:09 and Kristen Hatley at 24:56.
The Falcon Cross Country teams will be in action again on September 12th at the Barton Bulldog Invite in Wilson, North Carolina.
