|Saturday, 16 February 2008|
|Misenheimer, NC---Pfeiffer men's basketball team celebrated senior night with a 87-72 victory over Coker College Saturday night. Chris Woods had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Peiffer as the Falcons improved to 18-5 overall and 14-3 in the conference. Coker falls to 8-16 and 6-11. |
It was senior night and it was alumni night. Merner gym on the campus of Pfeiffer University was packed, and the Falcons did not disappoint, scoring 19 points in the first 3:09 of the game to take a 14 point lead vs. Coker. It was a lead they would never relinguish as Pfeiffer stretched it to 19 points at half and as many as 28 points in the second half and won 87-72. Four year starter Craig Thomas and fellow senior Thomas Carr, a transfer playing in his second year at Pfeiffer went out in style. The seniors were a big part of the great start to the game as Carr made two 3-pointers and Thomas a dunk off a pass from Carr in the opening run.
Robert McGriff was perfect from the floor going 7-7 and 2-2 from the 3-point line in leading Pfeiffer with 17 points. Freshman Chris Woods had 18 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes of playing time. Logan Call was 6-9 from the floor and he and Carr had 13 points each. The Falcons outrebounded the Cobras 49-38 and forced 24 Coker turnovers for their 18th win of the year.
"Our players really wanted to pay tribute to and honor our two seniors, and they did it in grand fashion," said Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis. "Each member of the team wore headbands to honor Craig and a t-shirt under their uniform to honor Thomas and then went out and played like champions. I cannot say we have ever had a pair of seniors that have provided player leadership on the level that these two have. They are quality young men and it was so nice to send them out on a positive note on their senior night. Robert is slowly getting back into form and Chris again was a monster on the glass. Logan has stepped up his play and had another outstanding offensive game and Mike Davidson had his best defensive game of the year. It was another game where 13 guys contributed to a win, at a time of year when most coaches are shortening their bench, this group continues to give me reasons to play them. Craig and Thomas are special players but more importantly special people. Our team has had success this season because these two have led them to it. Player leadership is the most important ingredient to winning team championships and these two are the best."
Pfeiffer won for the 18th time in their past 20 games and stand at 18-5 overall and 14-3 in Conference Carolina's. Pfeiffer ranked #6 in the latest East Regional Poll, sits alone in 2nd place in the conference, one game back of #1 regionally ranked Mt. Olive. Pfeiffer plays three of their final four regular season games on the road and twice this next week, at Allen on Tuesday in a non-conference game and at Anderson Saturday.
