Results vs. Davis & Elkins (2006-12-15 19:00:00)

Elkins, WV--- The Pfeiffer men's basketball team was down six points at Davis and Elkins in Elkins, WV, with less than seven seconds to play, when Robert McGriff made a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Marcus Hodges then defelcted a long inbounds pass and Thomas Carr stole the ball and made a 40-foot jump shot as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime. Carr's shot capped a miracle comeback by Pfeiffer who trailed most of the game after taking and early 12-point lead. The Falcons controlled the overtime period as Carr stole a pass on the first possession, was fouled and made both free throws to give the Falcons a lead they would never relinguish. Carr added two more 3-pointers in overtime; Tavares Cooper and Robert McGriff were dominant down the stretch and in overtime to lead Pfeiffer (7-0 overall, 3-0 in CVAC, #12 in the nation).

uncgame11_20061120_2002850433_editedPfeiffer was down 86-76 with 3:11 left in regulation and outscored the Senators 36-16 over the rest of the game. Pfeiffer was led by Copper's 22 points and 11 rebounds and point guard Robert McGriff had 23 points. DeMario Grier had 22 and Logan Call (Ronda, NC) added 15 points. The game's hero Thomas Carr (Toledo, OH), who had only three points with one second left in regulation, finished with 14 points.

Andrew Pieters (Oviedo, FL), playing in his first game as a Falcon, had six rebounds in 16 minutes. Pfeiffer scored 10 points in the regulation's final 28 seconds when they were down seven, 94-87. Cooper (Rockville, MC) and McGriff (Lancaster, SC) made attacking layups. After each basket, Pfeiffer fouled immediately and Davis and Elkins made three of four free throws before McGriff and Carr's 3-pointers.

uncgamepics_063"I have been fortunate to see and be a part of a lot of comebacks in my time at Pfeiffer, but this was the most incredible," said Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis. "We had Mario and Derek Moore, two guys who are always in the game during these late, tight game situations, fouled out. But our guys refused to quit. Our opponents and their fans were already celebrating an upset win over a nationally ranked (#12) team with about a minute to go. But somehow, someway, these Pfeiffer guys made big steals and big shots to pull this one out! Thomas Carr made several incredible plays, not just the 40-footer, and Robert McGriff had his best game ever at Pfeiffer. Tavares Cooper loaded us on his back, making plays at both ends. Coop rebounded everything late, made big shots at the end of regulation and in overtime and found Thomas for the "dagger 3-pointer" in overtime. I told the guys (with 3 minutes to go) how great it would be to spend Christmas telling our families about how we came back from 10 down to win this game and unbelievably these guys went out and did it. This group of young men proved once and for all that it is never over until the final buzzer sounds!"

Pfeiffer is now off for the holidays and will not play again until they return to West Virginia for the Glenville State Classic on December 30th and 31st.
