CYCLING ATTENDS DIXIE CLASSIC CRITERIUM
Winston-Salem, NC Ė Team Pfeiffer Cycling took a break from collegiate racing and took on the licensed racers in the Dixie Classic Criterium on Tuesday night.† Pfeiffer cyclists hold both collegiate and USA Cycling (USAC) licenses and therefore were able to participate in the USAC-sanctioned races.†
The first race of the evening was the Cat 5 race (like the collegiate D and C races).† Alex Stratmann (Lewisburg, WV), BJ Harris (Midway, NC), and Cameron Auton (Indian Trail, NC) began the race with a jump from the gun. Stratmann and Auton got away while Harris tried to control the main group. After doing a lionís share of the work Stratmann had done his job. It was left up to Auton and Harris to go for the sprint finish. The very long sprint ended with BJ Harris taking 2nd place and Cameron Auton finishing in 4th.
The Cat 3 / 4 race (collegiate B) began with Matt Tyndall (Newport, NC) and Michael Brown (Kernersville, NC) attacking from the very start. Both Falcons were able to get a half lap advantage on the group. Brown made a move to distance himself even more. Tyndall then began shutting down any attempts to bridge the gap to Brown.† Brown was caught and then worked with an ex-professional racer to actually lap the field. Tyndall was taken down by a reckless move by another team. He hit the pavement hard. He was able to stand after a few minutes. He has road rash but nothing was broken.† In the final sprint Brown was able to finish 2nd.
The main event was the Cat 1 / 2 race (Menís A) with Joey Rosskopf (Decatur, GA) and again Michael Brown. Brown had less than fifteen minutes to recover from the last race. This was the fastest race of the evening. The field was full of professional and ex-professional racers. Brown did a great job of making sure the pack did not catch Rosskopf. The race was blown apart after Rosskopf not only lapped the field but lapped the group twice! Everyone watching was stunned as the Falconís made winning look easy. Rosskopf took two primes as well. Brown finished a strong 10th place overall in the Cat 1 / 2 race. Rosskopf make the final sprint look easy as he took 1st place.
