HUNTER HONORED BY IWLCA
Misenheimer, NC – The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) recently recognized five student-athletes for their accomplishments off the field, honoring three as IWLCA Scholar-Athletes for excellence in the classroom as well as two for outstanding accomplishments in the field of community awareness. Pfeiffer’s Patty Hunter was recognized as one of the Community Awareness award recipients for the season along with Quinnipiac’s Lyndsey Banach. Also honored were Princeton’s Kristin Schwab, Southern New Hampshire’s Julie Kraus, and Elizabethtown’s Anna Ford as the Scholar-Athlete for their respective divisions.Patty Hunter, a senior from Rockville, Maryland, helped run Pfeiffer Pfights, a 5K run/24-mile bike race to raise money for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness in January 2009. The event was run through Catholics at Pfeiffer (CAP), a student ministries organization of which Hunter was the President. In her second year of coordinating the event, Pfeiffer Pfights raised over $4,000. Members of the Pfeiffer community including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and local residents participated in the event.
While serving as the Vice President of the Pfeiffer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Hunter spearheaded Dry Night, an evening of alcohol-free activities designed to show classmates everyone can have a good time without drinking and raise money for Make-A-Wish. The highlight of the evening was the Mr. Pfeiffer pageant, an amusing and light-hearted competition that included categories such as talent, evening and team wear, a Q & A, and a “best pick up line” contest. The Pfeiffer student-athletes raised over $1600 at the event.
As a member of SAAC, Hunter also helped organized two evenings of Parents’ Night Out. Members of the community were able to enjoy a child-free evening while Pfeiffer student-athletes played board games, watched Pfeiffer men’s and women’s basketball games, and ate dinner with the children. Through this event the Falcons raised additional money for Make-A-Wish.
On top of everything already mentioned, Patty volunteered her time as a Sports Chaplain on Pfeiffer’s campus. In this leadership role, she encouraged, ministered to, and supported Pfeiffer athletes. She also volunteered for the Special Olympics as an inspirational cheerleader for participants.
Patty will accept her award at the WLCA/US Lacrosse banquet on Saturday, June 13 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
