HICKORY, N.C. – Pfeiffer University opened up its 2009 women’s volleyball season with a split in pair of matches on Friday night at the 2009 Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational in Hickory, NC. The Lady Falcons began their year with a 3-1 (15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 13-25) loss at the hands of Wingate, before bouncing back with a decisive 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-7) victory against Fayetteville State in the night cap. Kristina Mordini led the way in match one for the Lady Falcons with nine assists, while Vanessa Gerig served up 10 aces in match two to pace Pfeifer.
WINGATE 3, PFEIFFER 1
Wingate came out of the gate with a 12-4 run in the first set led by Stormi Gale’s four kills. Mordini tried to lead a Lady Falcons comeback with a kill at 17-10, but a handful of offensive miscues by Pfeiffer from there led to the Bulldogs pulling away in a 25-15 win in game one.
The Lady Falcons took their first lead of the match in the second set on a kill by Mordini at 6-6. Wingate then pulled away with ten straight points before a kill by Abbie Ovbey brought Pfeiffer to within six at 24-18. Wingate finished off Pfeiffer on a kill by Gale to go up 2-0 in the match.
Pfeiffer began the third set on fire as Gerig racked up the first seven points en route to a third set win. Victoria Parrish put Pfeiffer up 20-13 with one of her seven kills of the match. Ovbey gave the Lady Falcons their first set win of the season with one of her half-dozen kills as Pfeiffer staved off a sweep by Wingate with a 25-20 win in game three.
A kill by Gerig gave the Lady Falcons an 8-7 lead in game three, but again, Wingate ran off from there. Gale, along with teammate Lauren Billo, helped the Bulldogs pull away from Pfeiffer for the match win in set four.
PFEIFFER 3, FAYETTEVILLE STATE 0
Gerig got game one off to a fast 4-1 Pfeiffer start with three of her aces in his first four serve attempts. Mordini, along with Brittany Dickens and Lauren Dickens, picked up multiple kills for an 11-4 early lead. Mordini went on another mini-run with kills at the back end of set one helping Pfeiffer to the 1-0 set advantage.
The Lady Broncos claimed a 10-7 lead in set two on a kill by Joi Emanuel and offensive error by the Lady Falcons. Brittany Dickens tied things up at 10-10 with her first kill of the set before her second kill at 14-12 helped Pfeiffer pull away. Gerig added three more aces after that while Mordini closed out set two on another hard kill.
Gerig started off set three much in the way she did the previous couple of sets. A couple of Mordini kills, Fayetteville State miscues and another service ace shot Pfeiffer out to a 7-2 lead. Gerig closed out the speedy match with her final three aces in the final five service attempts. Mordini finished the match with a dozen kills while Gerig also tossed up 19 assists in addition to her 10 aces.
The Lady Falcons wrap up their opening weekend in the L-R Invitational with another pair of matches on Saturday. Pfeiffer will take on Elizabeth City State at 10:00 a.m. before finishing off with host Lenoir-Rhyne at 1:00 p.m.
