MEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN 80TH MINUTE AGAINST #18 FRANCIS MARION

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The 18th-ranked Francis Marion Patriots had the advantage of the tallest guy on the field Sunday afternoon and made it paid off. Senior Kyle Clinton (Safety Harbor, FL) standing at 6’4’’, headed home the lone goal of the match in the 80th minute as the Patriots defeated the Pfeiffer Falcons 1-0 at N.E. Lefko Field. Francis Marion improves to 3-1 with the win while the Falcons drop to the .500 mark at 2-2.

In a scoreless first half of play, both teams had ample opportunities to find the back of the net and take an early advantage. The Falcons had the most chances in the opening period as Alex Landim (Brockton, MA) and Johannes Tisell (Molndal, SWEDEN) each sent shots to the net within five seconds of one another only to have both knocked down by Patriots goalkeeper Clark Richeson (Mansfield, TX). Francis Marion’s scoring chances came late in the period with Adrian Sikorski (Inglewood, ONTARIO) firing wide left and Chris Foltanski (Long Valley, NJ) blasting a shot wide right.

In the second half, Sikorski would send another shot on goal only to have it rejected by Falcons keeper Alex Moreno (Huntersville, NC).  Richeson would turn away another quality opportunity for the Falcons on a shot by Renato Barbosa (Charlotte, NC) to keep the match at a scoreless draw. From the right-side of the field on a corner kick, Sikorski (Inglewood, ONTARIO) would pick up the helper as Clinton connected on the header finding the left post for his fourth goal of the season.

The Falcons outshot Francis Marion 14-10 on the afternoon and held the 8-7 advantage in corner kick opportunities but were never able to beat Richeson in goal. Richeson stopped nine shots for the shutout while Moreno knocked away four. Pfeiffer will resume action on Saturday afternoon, September 12th at 4:00 p.m. in the Conference Carolinas opener at home against Belmont Abbey.
