Charlotte, N.C.----The Pfeiffer University women’s golf team shot a tourney-best 315 Tuesday, taking the title in the ninth annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament at the Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation.
The Falcons posted a two-day total of 637, topping second-place Newberry College by 13 strokes (637-650). Host Wingate finished fourth at 661, one stroke behind third-place UNC Pembroke (660). Twelve teams were represented in this year’s event.
Newberry freshman Maria Luz Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) earned medalist honors Tuesday, posting the top round of the tourney with a two-under-par 70 on the par 72, 5815-yard layout. Besio had a tournament-high eight birdies in 36 holes, including five birdies Tuesday. Besio finished the two-day event with an even par 144. She posted a two-over-par 74 Monday.
Pfeiffer had two student-athletes on the all-tournament team. Falcon senior Charlene Reid (Ballymoney, Ireland) earned second place with a 149. She shot an even-par 72 Tuesday. Pfeiffer senior Brittany Beltran (Sacramento, CA) tied for third with a 153. Beltran carded a 78 Monday and a 75 Tuesday.
Catawba College junior Kelsey Babos (Uniontown, OH) shared third place with Beltran. After a 75 Monday, Babos recorded a 78 Tuesday. UNC Pembroke sophomore Katja Dammann (Pinehurst, NC) rounded out the all-tournament team with her fifth-place showing. Dammann was very consistent, shooting 77-77 for a two-day total of 154.
Catawba finished fifth in the team standings with a 666. The rest of the field included Carson-Newman College (671), Lenoir-Rhyne University (673), Queens University of Charlotte (674), Tusculum College (677), Mount Olive College (686), Lincoln Memorial University (706) and The Citadel (717).
Eleven of the 12 teams improved their scores from Monday to Tuesday. Carson-Newman shaved 19 strokes from their team total Tuesday. The Eagles shot 345 Monday and 326 Tuesday.
The big highlight Tuesday was a hole-in-one by Brevard freshman Alice Klochkova on the par-three 17th hole (136 yards). The Moscow, Russia native used a five wood to record her first career hole-in-one. Mount Olive freshman Valentina Urquiola (Anzoategui, Venezuela) followed Carson-Newman’s lead, chopping 12 strokes from her Monday score.
