GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University men's cross country team finished 5th in the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Mars Hill Colllege, ranked #4 in the region, won the meet with a score of 31 points, followed by Concord University in 2nd and St. Augustine's College in 3rd. Pfeiffer finished 12 points behind 4th place, local rival Catawba College.
Pfeiffer was led by senior Matt Tyndall who ran one of the best times of his career and finished 9th overall with a time of 27:13. The freshmen combo of Will Oliver and Daniel Barnhardt finished 2nd and 3rd for Pfeiffer, both breaking the 30 minute mark for the first time in an 8k race. Oliver finished 25th with a time of 29:24 and Barnhardt came across 29th with a 29:41.
Freshman Zack Allen, a West Stanly High School product, finished 4th for Pfeiffer in 38th position with a time of 31:21. Junior Zach Gray rounded out the five scoring places with a personal best time of 32:28. Junior Grady Gaston finished with a time of 34:26.
"Four guys ran PR's today, while Tyndall and Gaston were only seconds off" commented Coach Scott Nolt. "We don't have a deep team this year and not having Josh this week makes it even tougher. It's a lot of pressure on every one of our guys to step up each week, and they have done a great job doing just that." Freshman Josh Roberts was sidelined last week with a sprained foot, but should return to practice this week.
Pfeiffer is in action Friday October 2nd at the UNCC Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, NC.
