13 ACES AND NINE BLOCKS HELPS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ROLL TO 3-0 SWEEP OF BELMONT ABBEY

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Thanks in part to 13 service aces and nine team blocks, the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons rolled to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) sweep over the visiting Belmont Abbey Crusaders in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Wednesday night at Merner Gym. With the win, Pfeiffer picked up its seven-straight win improving to 10-6 overall, 7-1 in conference play. Belmont Abbey falls to 2-10, 2-5.

In set one, the Lady Falcons jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead on three-consecutive kills by junior Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL). An ace by Crusader libero Taylor Stern (Greensboro, NC) would get the visitors as close as two early in the set before the Lady Falcons pulled away on another Mordini kill. Late in the set, Brittany Dickens (Raleigh, NC) would register a couple of kills, Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, IL) would serve up a pair of aces and Belmont Abbey would commit 14 errors allowing Pfeiffer to take a 1-0 match advantage.

In the middle set, the Crusaders would have an early 5-3 lead on a kill by sophomore Steffanie Holler (Wake Forest, NC). Mordini would help bring the Lady Falcons back even with a kill before the Crusaders would miscue on three-straight attack attempts for a 10-8 Pfeiffer lead. Halfway through the set, Dickens would help herself out with two more aces and get a couple of kills from freshman Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) to lead Pfeiffer to the 25-17 win in set two.

Down 10-5 in set three on a Bria James (Statesville, NC) kill, the Lady Falcons would roar back to score the next seven points taking a 12-10 lead on a Victoria Parrish (Henderson, NC) ace. An ace by Holler put Belmont Abbey within one at 14-13 before four more errors by the visitors gave Pfeiffer the 25-15 set and match win.

Mordini led all attackers with 10 kills on the night. James for Belmont Abbey secured nine while Dickens finished with eight. Six of Pfeiffer’s 13 aces would go to Dickens while Gerig scored another four. Gerig also finished with a match-high 29 assists. Belmont Abbey finished the night with 43 errors.

Pfeiffer will be back in action on Friday night at conference-leader Mount Olive at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Falcons will wrap up the weekend trip with a noon match at Barton.
