MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Senior Brittany Dickens (Raleigh, NC) registered a season-high 15 kills as Pfeiffer University got back in the win column with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-19) win over St. Andrews in women’s volleyball action on Wednesday night inside the Merner Gym. The win marks the Lady Falcons’ 12th-straight win in conference play improving to 16-7 overall, 12-1 in league action, clinching a spot in the conference tournament. The Lady Knights falls to 9-14, 4-9.
St. Andrews fell behind early in set one committing 15 errors in the initial set. Coming out of a Lady Knights time out, Dickens threw down her second kill of the opener giving Pfeiffer a 9-5 lead. The Lady Falcons would then go onto score eight points in a row with a kill by Dickens, Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) and a pair by Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) pulling away in a 25-9 set one win.
Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, IL) started off set two serving for the first seven points, with three aces, and a couple more kills by Dickens. Entering Wednesday night’s action, Gerig ranked fourth in NCAA II in aces per set. A sloppy back-and-forth middle set saw Pfeiffer pull away slightly until a kill by Lady Knights senior Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, NC) put St. Andrews within two at 16-14. Two more late kills by Mordini along with a pair of kills and an ace by Dickens sent the Lady Falcons up 2-0 in the match.
Podolsky brought St. Andrews to within a pair again early in set three with another kill at 5-3. Podolsky and Gerig would then go on to trade kills in a five-play stretch for a 10-6 Lady Falcons lead. Four more kills by Dickens from the half-way point of set three on, helped the hosts secure a 25-19 set and 3-0 match victory. St. Andrews committed 41 errors on the night with six blocks while Pfeiffer hit .225 with 4.5 blocks.
The Lady Falcons and Lady Knights will now both step out of conference play to partake in the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas Crossover to be played at Armstrong Atlantic this weekend in Savannah, GA. Pfeiffer opens up with the host Pirates while St. Andrews will take on Flager on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
