MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Freshman Laura Mottel (North Augusta, SC) put home the lone goal midway through the seventh minute of play as visiting Newberry College went on to shutout Pfeiffer University in women’s soccer action at N.E. Lefko Field on Thursday afternoon. Newberry improves to 12-3-1 overall while the loss snaps the Lady Falcons nine-game unbeaten and seven-game win streak dipping to 9-4-3.
A relatively quiet first half of play saw Newberry hold a 5-4 advantage in shots, 3-1 with shots on goal. Ashleigh Rhoads (Palm Bay, FL) and Megan Reaves (Mims, FL) each had an early opportunity on net but fired high above the frame. At the 6:35 mark, Ashley Reetz (Summerville, SC) found Mottel (North Augusta, SC) on a cross inside the box that beat Lady Falcon keeper Suzie Hinman (Idaho Falls, ID) upstairs for the only strike of the match.
After the intermission, Pfeiffer was able to get off four shots in a three minute span with nothing to show for it. Reaves fired high and right of Newberry net minder Emily Rhoades (Buckley, WA) 59 seconds apart while Sheena Regan (Chesapeake, VA) had two back-to-back shots two minutes later. Rhoades turned away Regan’s first attempt while the second attempt trickled just wide to the right.
Both defenses stood tall on Thursday as Pfeiffer gained the slight advantage in shots 12-8. Rhoades earned the shutout for Newberry turning aside five on goal while Hinman also knocked away five for Pfeiffer.
Pfeiffer will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday afternoon getting back inside Conference Carolinas action. The Lady Falcons will host St. Andrews in a 1:00 p.m. match at Lefko field.
