MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Sophomore Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) tallied a hat trick on Saturday afternoon leading Pfeiffer University past St. Andrews 3-1 in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer action at N.E. Lefko Field. The win pushes the Lady Falcons overall mark to 10-4-3 on the year, 7-1-2 in league play. The Lady Knights fall to 4-11-1, 2-7-1.
In a rain-filled first half, Pfeiffer held the ball on offense from start to finish. The Lady Falcons got off 14 shots, however just three made it on net. Megan Reaves (Mims, FL) accounted for four shot in the period. Marie Savage (Lyons, NY) managed the only shot on goal for St. Andrews in the stanza.
Wombwell would cash in on her team-leading ninth goal of the season 10 minutes before the half. Ashley Hawkins (Madison, NC) took the initial shot from the left wing that was turned away by Lady Knights keeper Becca Knott (Jacksonville, NC). Wombwell collected the rebound and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Lady Falcon lead at the break.
In the 62nd minute, Wombwell would strike again, taking a cross from Tiffany Caudle (Gibsonville, NC) and scoring just inside the left post to put Pfeiffer up by a pair. St. Andrews would cut that deficit in half as Krystal Hedderman (Fredericksburg, VA) put home her sixth of the season with an assist to Sam Frazer (Goldsboro, NC).
Wombwell would complete the three-goal afternoon in the 82nd minute taking a short pass from Kirsten Bartsch (Leesburg, VA) and finding the back of the net for the game’s final tally. Wombwell just missed her fourth of the afternoon minutes later clanking one off the right post.
With just two matches remaining in the regular season, Pfeiffer will host Lenoir-Rhyne in a pivotal region matchup on Tuesday afternoon. Game time between the Lady Falcons and Bears is set for 3:00 p.m.
