NEWBERRY, S.C. – Helen McKinney tossed in a game high 15 points leading Newberry College to a 68-51 win over Pfeiffer in women’s basketball action on Tuesday afternoon in Eleazer Arena. Newberry moves their overall record to 7-2 overall while the Lady Falcons, wrapping up the ’09 portion of their schedule, fall to 2-5 at the winter break.
Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) gave Pfeiffer their one and only lead of the day on an early three-pointer just 45 seconds into the contest. After a jumper by Newberry’s Amy Browne cut the lead to one, McKinney would drain a fast-break jumper to give Newberry the eventual lead for good. McKinney’s basket would start an early 12-0 run for the hosts creating the separation for the duration. A pair of layups by Olivia Surratt (Morganton, NC) and free throws by Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA) would get the Lady Falcons to within seven at 29-22, but another 9-0 run by Newberry pushed them to the 38-26 halftime lead.
In the final 40 minutes, Jamila Harris (Danville, VA) picked up the offensive board on her first miss, connecting on her second attempt, trying to turn the table around early in the second half. Browne, who finished with 14 points on the day, finished off a Newberry 10-0 run with a pair of free throws at the 12:51 mark, putting Newberry up by 22. Devona Knight (Woodbridge, VA) tried to get the Lady Falcons back in the contest with six-straight points, but McKinney, Brown and company would again pull away late for the final 17-point margin.
Pfeiffer will now begin winter break needing to regroup for Conference Carolinas play on the schedule from here on out.
