WOODS' DOUBLE-DOUBLE GETS MEN'S BASKETBALL BACK IN WIN COLUMN WITH 106-91 VICTORY OVER COKER

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University shot 53.6% from behind the arc, draining 15 three’s, in a 106-91 victory over the Coker Cobras in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action on Monday night in the Merner Gym. Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC), one of six Falcons in double-digit scoring, led all offensively with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The win pushes Pfeiffer’s record to 6-4 overall, 2-2 in league play, while the Cobras drop to 5-6, 2-3.

In a back-and-forth first half, Pfeiffer would gain its largest lead of the frame on a Woods jumper that put the hosts up eight, 19-11, with 12:03 to go in the period. Coker then went on a 10-2 run squaring the contest at 23 on a three-point play converted by Ricardo Smith (Darlington, SC). Down by as many as four after a Thomas Wright (Sydney, AUSTRAILIA) field goal, the Falcons roared back closing out the half with a pair of three’s by Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, FL) and James Morse (Arundel, ME) for a 47-40 halftime lead.

With Pfeiffer holding onto a slim lead within the first four minutes of the second stanza, Coker regained the advantage on a Vatrick Thompson (West Columbia, SC) layup at the 16:01 mark that put the Cobras up 58-57. After a pair of Marshall Cabbagestalk (Sumter, SC) free throws put the visitors up six, the Falcons again stormed back, this time with a 15-0 run pulling away for good. Two free throws by Woods started the scoring streak that took place in a three-and-a-half minute span, before Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) capped it off with a long-range three.

A 7-0 spurt by the Falcons, thanks to more Woods free throws, a Derrick Truesdale (Waxhaw, NC) jumper and three by Hollinger, saw Pfeiffer enjoyed its biggest lead of the night, 92-75, with 5:44 to go. Wright brought the Cobras to within 10, down 99-89, but the Falcons closed out the contest minutes later with 7-2 run for the 15-point victory.

Pettiway, Morse and Davon Gilliard (Charleston, SC) each concluded the evening with 14 points. Hollinger capped off at 13 while James Crowder (High Point, NC) finished with 10. Mason Ambler (Atlanta, GA), fouling out with just over three minutes to go, led the Cobras with 18 points. Wright finished with 17 while Thompson rounded out at 13.

Pfeiffer will now play their next three games on the road beginning with Barton on Wednesday night. The Falcons will face the Bulldogs in Wilson at 7:30 p.m.
