MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Down by one with 19 seconds left, Queens University junior Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, NC) drove the lane and made the decisive layup as the Royals defeated Pfeiffer University 67-66 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Monday night. Hudley led all players with 18 points and 10 rebounds as Queens improved to 10-8 overall, 9-4 in conference play. Pfeiffer sees their five-game win streak come to an end dropping to 10-8, 10-3.
After closing out the first half on a 12-2 run trailing by four at the break, Pfeiffer came out and quick erased the deficit on a Shelley Reese (Brown Summitt, NC) three-pointer. The Lady Falcons were down by 14 with just over four minutes remaining in the first half before finishing the initial period with the run and starting hot in the second to tie the contest in the first 29 seconds of period two.
The Royals went back on the attack with a 9-0 run before Pfeiffer cut it back to two with a pair of Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA) free throws at 13:45. After Hudley’s basket three minutes later put Queens up six, the Lady Falcons again battled back taking the lead, 58-57, with 6:16 to go on a Celeste Caudill (Sparta, NC) triple. Outside of Jacquia Winstead’s (Elm City, NC) layup, Pfeiffer will hold the lead until the final ticks of the clock.
Down by one, it was Domonique China (Durham, NC) who took the potential buzzer-beater just inside the three-point circle but misfired with three seconds left. The Lady Falcons went up three on three different occasions before Hudley hit the game-winner with 19 to go.
For Queens, Ashley McGuirt (Indian Trail, NC) followed Hudley with 13 points. Winstead finished with 11 while Jazmine Edmonds (Manassas, VA) concluded with 10. For the Lady Falcons, Charlotte Fuller (Moorestown, NJ) and Caudill finished with 14. Reese followed closely with 13.
The Lady Falcons will look to start another win streak with a pair of road games to finish out the first week of February. Pfeiffer will travel to Converse on Wednesday before heading down to Limestone on Saturday.
