DAHLONEGA, G.A.  – The Pfeiffer University baseball team had its own version of a Super Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader away from 24th-ranked North Georgia to wrap up a three-game weekend series in Georgia. The Falcons stand at 2-2 on the young season while the Saints start their year off 1-2.

GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 7, #24 North Georgia 6 (10 innings)

Pfeiffer University used a ninth inning rally to force extra frames where the Falcons pushed a run across in the 10th inning to defeat 24th-ranked North Georgia 7-6 in game one of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.

North Georgia jumped on the Falcons in the first inning for the second straight game, using a bases loaded walk from Brad Hall and a pair of sacrifice flies to take a 3-0 opening inning advantage.

In the fourth inning, the Saints added two more runs as Craig Brisson singled home Kenny Bellavance and later in the inning, Andre Airich coaxed a bases loaded walk to score the second run of the frame and give North Georgia a 5-0 lead.

Pfeiffer answered in the sixth inning as Ethan Marsh singled home the Falcon’s first run of the game to make it 5-1, and in the 7th inning, Josh Strickland walked with the bases loaded and Aarin Sharpe doubled home a run as part of a three-run frame to pull Pfeiffer to within a run at 5-4.

After a Chad Sage one-out blast to put the Saints back up by two runs in the last of the seventh, Pfeiffer came to bat down a pair in the ninth and rallied with a Will Davis single that plated two runs, knotting the score at 6-6 and forcing extra innings.

In the 10th frame, Pfeiffer came out and used a Zack Pou single passed a diving Airich with the infield pulled in to plate Eric Shoemaker for the winning run. The Saints had a lead-off single in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to push a run across as the Falcons took game two of the series 7-6.

Luke Wilhelm (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Falcons, tossing 3.0 innings of one-hit ball, while striking out three. Pfeiffer pitchers combined to strike out 12 North Georgia batters.

GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 6, #24 North Georgia 4

Pfeiffer put a four spot on the board in the seventh inning on their way to taking the rubber game of a three-game set over 24th-ranked North Georgia on Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium in non-conference action.

It was Pfeiffer who would jump on top in the first inning in the final game of the series as Preston Lyon provided the RBI, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The Saints answered in the fourth inning as Andrew Airich notched his first home run of the year, unloading and launching a ball down the left field line that cleared the yellow line, knotting the score a run apiece. Later in the inning, Daniel Petitti gave North Georgia the lead, guiding a double to right center that brought Troy Snitker around to score and make it a 2-1 game.

After Pfeiffer’s Aarin Sharpe tied the game in the fifth inning with a single up the middle, Snitker came to the plate drilled s fastball halfway up the mountain in left field, putting the Saints right back on top 3-2 heading to the seventh inning.

In the seventh frame, the Falcons unleashed four hits and used RBI doubles from Zack Pou and Lyon to put a four spot on the board and take a 6-3 advantage. Kenny Bellavance pulled the Saints to within two runs in the eighth inning as the freshman lined a single to left center, scoring Snitker and making it a 6-4 Falcon lead, a margin that held true to the final out.

Pfeiffer’s Eric Shuford (1-0) was credited with the victory, going 6.0 innings and allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four. North Georgia’s Michael Patton (0-1) suffered the loss out of the pen, lasting one inning and allowing one hit and two earned runs while walking one.
