MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Visiting Catawba College pounded out 26 total hits on Wednesday afternoon sweeping Pfeiffer University in non-conference softball action at Jack Ingram Field. Catawba used a four-run third inning in the opener to win 6-2 while the nightcap began with a 10-run first en route to a 14-1 victory. The Lady Indians win both of their 2010 openers while the Lady Falcons drop to 1-3.
GAME ONE: Catawba 6, Pfeiffer 2
On a gusty day for softball, Carly Sabat (Warren, OH) began the day with a double down the left-field line leading off in the first. After a Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) sacrifice bunt pushed Sabat to third, Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) would line a single off of Pfeiffer starter Allison Braswell (Asheboro, NC) for an RBI single. Braswell was unable to return for the rest of the day after taking Marshall’s hit off the arm.
Pfeiffer responded in the home half of the first as Kylee Nichols (McMinville, OR) started off with her own double down the left-field line, later scoring the tying run on a Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC) wild pitch. In the four-run third, Marshall would deliver again with an RBI double to score Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC) before she would come around on Brittney Thornburg’s (Kings Mountain, NC) single up the middle. Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD) and Sabat would also pick up run-scoring singles in the third frame.
In the bottom of the third, Mariah Chalk (Hickory, NC) would bring in Bryttny Kreshka (Roseburg, OR) on her single to right while Catawba’s Hester finished game one’s scoring bringing in Erin Witalison (Gold Hill, NC) with her base hit to center. The Lady Indians would conclude the opener led by Sabat and her three hits while four others would finish with two.
GAME TWO: Catawba 14, Pfeiffer 1 (5 innings)
Catawba picked up right where the left off in game two putting a ten-spot on the board in the first. Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC) would clear the bases with a three-run double to center before Gibbs delivered the first of three long balls in the nightcap with a two-run shot to left-center.
Witalison registered her first RBI of the season in the second with a single to center, before a two-run blast to left off the bat of Marshall in the third made it a 13-0 game. Each team would trade runs in the seventh as Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) clanked a home run off the foul pole in left while Kreshka plated the lone Lady Falcon run with her single to right in the bottom of the fifth. Geouge went 3-for-4 leading Catawba with two RBI and four runs scored.
Freshman Kelsie Hudson (Mechanicsville, VA) tossed a complete game to earn the win in game two. Chalk suffered the loss for Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer will get back to action on Thursday afternoon hosting UNC-Pembroke at 2:00 p.m.
