FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore outfielder Tyler Boyd went 4-for-4, while senior designated hitter Jacob Wallace and senior catcher Logan Bland were both 3-for-4, to lead eighth-ranked Francis Marion University to an 8-5 non-conference win over Pfeiffer University, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 10) in college baseball action.
The Patriots improve to 2-1, while Pfeiffer drops to 2-3. FMU will play three games this weekend at the Lander University Valentine’s Day Classic beginning with 21st-ranked Lincoln Memorial University on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Senior left-hander Jeremiah Meiners (2-0) allowed only one run on six hits in five innings to earn the victory. He fanned five. Senior righty Brandon Forshee pitched a perfect ninth frame to record his second save in as many games.
Pfeiffer freshman right-hander Bryan Tuttle (0-1) allowed seven runs on 12 hits in his first career start.
Boyd rapped out RBI singles in each of his first two bats. Senior shortstop Barrett Kleinknecht was 2-for-4, scored three times and drilled a 390-foot solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. Bland scored once and had an RBI-single in the fifth. Both Martin Gordon and Tyler Cappelmann also had two hits for the Patriots who totaled 17 safeties.
Boyd’s second run-scoring hit snapped a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third. FMU exploded for six tallies in the fifth inning to go up 8-1. The Falcons took advantage of two FMU errors to plate four unearned runs in the eighth to draw to within 8-5. FMU reliever Patrick Mincey ended the rally when he struck out Zack Pou with the bases loaded.
Third baseman Aarin Sharpe was the lone Falcon with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Catcher J.T. Pope and right fielder Ethan Marsh collected RBIs in the eight-inning outburst.
FMU senior Trent Knight delivered a two-run, pinch-hit single in the Patriots’ fifth inning.
