PEMBROKE, N.C. Ė UNCP captured four of six singles matches on the day, but visiting Pfeiffer used a clean sweep in doubles play as well as Catie Thomasís third-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to edge the Braves, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at the UNCP Varsity Tennis Courts. The win snapped a two-game series winning streak for UNCP (1-1) who fell to 8-14 all-time against the Falcons. The win successfully opened the 2010 campaign for Pfeiffer (1-0).
Pfeiffer jumped out of the gates to grab all three doubles points, including an 8-1 win by Thomas and Chelsi Haefele over the UNCP tandem of Christian Minnick and Mia Winterbottom on court No. 3. The Falcons No. 2 doubles duo of Maddy Billeter and Jonnell Carpenter grabbed an 8-5 win over Janna Oxendine and Meredith Pierson, while Alena Krutkina and Patty Dominguez ousted UNCPís Jenna McGary and Maricel Quintero-Prieto on court No. 1 to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead heading into singles competition.
Dominguez stretched the visitorís lead out to 4-0 with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win over Winterbottom at No. 2 singles, before the Braves finally answered with four straight-sets singles wins to tie the contest at four apiece. Pierson upended Billeter 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Minnick defeated Haefele 7-5, 7-5 on court No.6 and McGary bested Krutkina 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to bring UNCP to within a single team point, before Quintero-Prieto posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Carpenter to knot things up.
Thomas took an easy 6-2 win in her first set with Oxendine at No. 4 singles, but the UNCP junior answered with a relatively simple 6-2 win of her own in the second set. Tied at 6-6 in the third set, it would be Thomas that would make the Falcons winners, coming out on the good end of a rousing 12-10 tiebreaker to win going away.
UNCP will be back in action again Friday when the Braves travel to Dahlonega, Ga., to open up Peach Belt Conference play against North Georgia. Pfeiffer will open up a two-match home stand on Wednesday against USC Aiken.
