MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Ranked #17 in the country, the USC-Aiken men’s tennis team took a 7-2 decision over Pfeiffer University on Wednesday afternoon. Despite being very closely contested, the Pacers took all three doubles match at the Knapp Tennis Center. USC-Aiken improves to 3-1 on the season while the Falcons even up at 1-1.
In doubles, the #1 match went the distance 9-8, going into a 7-3 tiebreak in favor of Juan Ponce and Gregory Andrade of USC-Aiken. The middle match saw the Falcons Frank Pouchet and Andrea Cazzaro fall 8-5 before Pfeiffer lost another tough match at #3 doubles as the tandem of Luis Villalta and Sid Kaushik fell 8-6.
Singles action saw Pfeiffer take wins at number three and five but couldn’t manage any other points against a tough Pacer squad. Johan de Wit took a 6-3, 7-6 (12-10) win in the three spot while Pouchet earned a four and three straight-sets win against Ben Klass. The Pacers took straight sets wins at number two and four while Andrade, after falling to Pfeiffer’s Cazzaro 6-4 in the first set, had to fight back for a 6-2, 6-3 win at number one.
The Falcons will get back to action next Wednesday traveling to Florence, SC for a match with Francis Marion. Pfeiffer will tangle with the Patriots beginning at 3:00 p.m.
