MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Mount Olive College hit .337 as a team on Thursday night cruising to a 3-0 (30-19, 30-20, 30-21) victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action inside the Merner Gym. With both wins coming against the Falcons, Mount Olive improves to 2-0 on the young year, 2-0 inside league play. Pfeiffer, committing 45 total errors on the night, falls to 4-4, 1-2.
Mount Olive came out early in set one with a 12-2 run, thanks to a pair of Noel Garcia (Hubana, CUBA) kills and a half-dozen Falcon miscues. Pfeiffer got to within six at 16-10 on an Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA) ace before a Christaan Rombaut (Halifax, NOVA SCOTIA) kill started a six-point in seven-play stretch to close out set one.
A Camilo Guerci (Miami, FL) kill put Mount Olive 8-4 up early in set two before Adam Miracle (Cincinnati, OH) slammed down a kill at 18-10. After a Falcon timeout, Jerry Olmeda (Rochester, NY) would secure a kill to get the hosts within eight, but Pfeiffer committed six more errors in 15 plays allowing the Trojans to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Falcons came out in the third set and made things close early on, but again, miscues would come back to haunt the home team in the end. Garcia continued with back-to-back kills halfway through the final stanza, finishing with a match-high 14. From a Mount Olive 12-8 lead on, the Trojans would continue to hit well, take advantage of Pfeiffer mistakes and put points on the board two-to-one against the Falcons to earn the sweep.
Mount Olive hit .308, .357 and .342 in each set to stay unbeaten. Behind Garcia’s 14 kills, Rombaut finished one behind with 13. Reigning conference player of the week Alex Hoekstra (Middletown, OH) had a match-high 38 assists for the Trojans. For Pfeiffer, Clancy Gay (Cincinnati, OH) had nine kills to lead the Falcons.
