PEMBROKE, N.C. – UNCP scored 11 runs on 12 hits to snap an offensive lull and rode an effective relief performance by Rudy Brown to an 11-7 victory over visiting Pfeiffer Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field. The 19th-ranked Braves improve to 18-4 overall while the Falcons dip to 13-17.
Jason Coker singled, doubled and scored three times on a 2-for-3 plate performance to pace a quartet of Braves (18-4) with multi-hit tallies on the night. Sophomore Alex Pearce drove in a trio of runs on a 2-for-4 hitting line, with Joe Mangum and Tom Porricelli booking two hits as well. Will Davis and Eric Shoemaker each turned in three hits for the Falcons (13-17) who fell to 10-12-1 all-time against the Braves.
Brown (3-1) struck out five and allowed just a pair of runs in three innings from the mound to grab the victory for the Braves who also got three or multi-strikeout efforts from starter Andrew MacDonald and closer Brian Willis. Eric Shuford (3-3) took the loss for Pfeiffer after surrendering nine hits and nine runs (eight earned) in four innings of work.
Pfeiffer grabbed the early lead on a two-out RBI single from Aarin Sharpe in the top of the second, but the Braves rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame, and then pushed their lead out to 5-1 with two more scores in the third. The Falcons whittled away at their deficit with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames, but UNCP put the game away with three runs in the home half of the fifth inning before adding a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
